And we’re off…

Although technically their first days back in Springfield was last week, much like the first week of school, not a lot really gets done.  Lots of handshaking and catching up, the administration (Governor) tells us how it’s going to be a great year, and everyone pretty much leaves early.  Yesterday however we opposed our first bill of the year, so I guess that means our work has officially started.  (Note: please do not contact your legislator regarding this issue, if the time comes that member involvement is necessary, I will be sure to let you know).

Here’s an example of the sort of thing we deal with that you would normally never hear about:

HB3812 would have required that, before doing a referral to another healthcare provider, the referring physician would be responsible for verifying that the new provider was also in network with the patient’s insurance company.  Although we acknowledge that insurance can be confusing for patients, this bill puts entirely too much onus on the physician.  You will be glad to know that the bill failed 5 (yes) – 6 – (no) – 4 (present) in the House Insurance committee, and changes are being negotiated.  The bill will have another opportunity to be heard with a new amendment.

Throw in five fundraisers for the week, one new PAC program, and a new sponsor for our CoPay bill and I’d say we have hit the ground running.
