Recoupment Starting To Move

In Illinois there is no limit on how long an insurance company may request a return of payment for services already rendered.  Cases have been brought to our offices of doctors being requested to return hundreds of thousands of dollars and reaching as far back as 10 years.  Last year the ICS took the lead and formed a coalition of over 25 health care providers and allies to fight for a time limit on these recoupments.  Our efforts started a strong movement for recoupment reform in Illinois.  Although, a strong list of supporters is a strong tool at the Statehouse, it is equally important to reduce any long list of opponents as well.

Today we made headway in our negotiations with some of our largest opponents of HB1193, and we hope to have an agreeable amendment filed very soon.  We have already removed the opposition of CHIP and Health Alliance, and very soon we hope to get agreed language from Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Humana, and the Chamber of Commerce.  The legislative process is rarely a quick one, but with a little determination and patience you eventually get a little motion.  Soon, Illinois will be in line with other states and  insurance companies will no longer be able to recollect payment beyond a eighteen month time limit.

This will be a great victory for all providers of healthcare, thanks to the ICS.
