Identifying the Players

There are over 1,500 registered lobbyists in Illinois, but I would estimate that only 10% or so could be considered “regulars” at the Statehouse.  Nearly every group is accounted for: The Nurses Association, Advance Practice Nurses, Nurse Anesthetists, and most other health care groups  have contract lobbyists.  The ICS, however, maintains a full-time, in-house lobbyist whereas the vast majority of healthcare groups rely on a contract lobbyist who represents a variety of different interests. Having on-staff representation is one of the primary reasons the ICS has been able to advance its own initiatives for the past four years, when many other groups found themselves mired in partisan gridlock.

We have begun to develop productive relationships with many of these different groups at the Statehouse.  Whether it is the Department of Professional Regulation rewriting the Medical Practice Act, or the Trial Lawyers hosting Workers’ Compensation meetings, we are making sure that we are at the table and that chiropractic has a voice.
